A-lister Tom Cruise only had positive things to say about The Last Samurai’s historical accuracy. “With the Industrial Revolution going on in the United States, it was a real transition time in Japan,” the actor told Urban Cinefile. “[The Japanese] know we’re going to honor their culture and try to figure out what it is.” Nevertheless, it appears that this was not the case. Even if his samurai armor is appealing to the eye, it falls short of the mark. Indeed, it is not something that an American man would wear if he were approved by the samurais. This film is set in 1876, although he is wearing armor from two centuries before. You could argue that it was simply an old set, but the material could not have survived two centuries.
