It’s almost unheard of to leave Hollywood at the pinnacle of your career. Greta Garbo, on the other hand, succeeded in doing just that. Before making her speaking debut in Anna Christie in 1930, the three-time Academy Award nominee had a silent film career. She decided to retire at the age of 35 after a period of “box office poison.” Garbo relished the luxury of her retirement vacation. She also began a massive art collection, which by the time she died was worth millions of dollars.
