A young man was dressed in his U.S. Army uniform at the Dallas-Forth Worth International Airport awaiting his flight. Tears began streaming down the soldier’s face, clearly, he was in distress. Airport employees approached him, but then a passenger screamed, “Don’t let him board the flight!”
A Normal Day
It was a typically hectic day at the airport with planes taking off and landing every second. No one seemed to notice the soldier sitting on the floor staring deeply at his cell phone.
Brooks and Haley’s first meeting was a fairytale. When they first laid eyes on each other they both had butterflies in their stomachs. Nothing would separate these two, that is just the U.S. Army.
A Lifelong Dream
You see, Brooks had a dream of becoming a combat soldier. With deep love and Haley’s support, Brooks enlisted in the military. Just 2 short years later, he proposed to the love of his life. Little did they know, a big surprise was just around the corner.
Brooks was in the dark, but during their wedding, Haley had a big secret. She was pregnant! Once she told Brooks, he was just as excited as she was, if not more. They were both thrilled with the idea of bringing a baby into the world. If only it were that easy for these lovebirds.
Pretty In Pink
Soon after, Brooks received a phone call that he was to report to training in a few weeks. He made sure to stick by Haley’s side while he could, accompanying her to every doctor’s appointment. They then received the news that they were having a girl!
All soldiers complain that saying goodbye to family and friends is the hardest part. Brooks felt the same when he had to say goodbye to Haley and their baby girl for training in Fort Bliss, Texas.
The Middle East
Brooks is an army soldier of the 114th Field Artillery Regiment, 2nd Battalion of the Mississippi National Guard. This trip was only the start; once training was complete, he would be deployed for 9 months in Kuwait.
Brooks constantly thought of his two girls back home and stressed that he may never see them again. Soldiers live and breathe sacrifice, so it was nothing new for Brooks. He would put his life on the line to fight for America.
It was finally time for Brooks to leave and it was understandably filled with tears. The only thing that kept him from staying in Texas was his dream to be in the military. Before he got on the plane, they decided to name their little girl.
He said goodbye to 7-month-pregnant Haley and little Millie, who he would meet very soon. Off he went to war. Haley’s pregnancy was going great, she had so much energy and little morning sickness.
Waiting For Millie
The only health risk to worry about was her elevated blood pressure. Haley tried to relax about Brooks at war and focused on keeping her baby healthy and strong. Everyone in the Lindsey family was awaiting Millie’s birth; sooner than later she would be here!
Haley prayed each day that Brooks would arrive home for the birth, but she knew not to get her hopes up. Brooks and Haley didn’t have it easy. They had to face many barriers in order for Brooks to be able to come home to see the birth of his little girl.
Rules Are Rules
What would he do? Men were almost never allowed to leave their post and the rules were set in stone. Soldiers only get approval from the Red Cross if the woman is in distress. Haley wasn’t, so they had to think of another way to get him home.
He Wouldn’t Make It Home
The only positive was that Haley was healthy enough that she didn’t need Brooks by her side. Brooks was obviously discouraged that he would miss the birth, but he was glad to know that Haley and Millie were safe.
Haley’s high blood pressure wasn’t enough to bring her husband home, but a doctor’s appointment that turned up the impossible changed everything. She visited the doctor for a routine visit but was alerted that her blood pressure was extremely high.
A Stressful Call
The doctor worried that Millie could be in stress or that something could happen to her. Haley was told to go home and rest, he would need to perform more tests and would get back to her ASAP. Haley suddenly felt helpless and realized how much she could use her husband’s support in that very moment.
Time To Speed Things Up
Haley thought her heightened stress levels would be enough for them to send Brooks home. She then received a terrifying phone call. Haley didn’t want to answer the phone, she was expecting the absolute worst.
Waiting For Approval
It was her doctor on the other end and he didn’t have good news. Her internal organs were being affected by her high blood pressure, but that wasn’t all. This could also affect the baby’s health. The doctor decided that the health risk to Haley and Millie was too great, they would need to take action immediately.
Haley was immediately rushed to the hospital where she would receive 24-hour care. They didn’t want to take any chances, so the doctor decided to induce labor. Her status a week ago compared to now was so different that she became really anxious.
On The Phone
She was able to call Brooks and he was there to calm her a bit. Brooks, on the other hand, was excited, he could actually be there for Millie’s birth now. It was now time for the couple to get Brooks home!
Far From Home
There were so many emotions flowing through both of them, but they needed to focus and get down to business. Haley needed to tell the Red Cross about her change in condition- this would hopefully give Brooks approval to come home.
In The Middle Of Nowhere
They asked for doctor confirmation and other documents as well. After reviewing Haley’s condition, they deemed it serious enough for Brooks to head back home. Brooks was beyond stressed, he had no idea how his two girls were faring and if they would be okay.
They were so lucky Brooks hadn’t yet been deployed to Kuwait. He was still in training, fairly close in El Paso, Texas. He went straight to the airport to get the next flight out of there, but then something came up.
Here Come The Tears
When he got to the El Paso airport, he was told that all of the flights were full and he would need to connect in Dallas. The next flight was over 24 hours away! He wasn’t sure Haley would be able to wait for him.
Taking Her Time
Brooks knew in his heart that he wouldn’t make it to the birth; hat’s when they put their heads together and came up with a plan. Brooks’ mom heard the awful news and took out her phone to record Millie’s birth.
Brooks sat on the floor at the El Paso airport and watched his wife give birth. Although he would have much rather been there to hold her hand through it all, this was the best they could do. It seems that all Haley needed was Brooks to be there.
A Sweet Blessing
Seconds after the FaceTime began, her water broke and she went into labor. All Brooks wanted to do was run through security, straight to the gate and onto the plane. When he finally made it onto the plane, he couldn’t help but worry about her status.
He was still so far from home. He began to feel helpless sitting in that cramped airplane seat. Brooks finally made it to Dallas and he was on his way to catch his connecting flight. When he got to the gate, he was informed of terrible news- the flight was delayed 2 hours.
Brooks couldn’t believe everything was going wrong today. All he wanted was to get home to Haley and Millie. The odds of reaching her while she was still in labor became less and less of a reality. The doctor then informed Haley that the birth would occur at that moment!
A Perfect Little Girl
Brooks grasped his phone, reassured Haley that everything would be ok and cheered her on from his iPhone. She was nearing the end of the birthing process and tears began forming in Brooks’ eyes.
The Job Duties
That’s when his flight began boarding, but he just sat there glued to the screen, tears running down his face. Airport security took notice and slowly approached him. He didn’t even notice, his eyes filled with tears and all.
A Different Life
Brooks hadn’t even heard them begin to board the plane, he was too caught up in Haley’s birthing. The security personnel told him he should board the plane before it was too late. Just as Haley was about to crown, Brooks began boarding the plane.
Other passengers heard the story and tried to delay the flight so Brooks could watch his daughter’s birth. That’s when the doctor yelled, “Don’t let him board the flight! She’s here! She’s here!” When Millie was born, a whole group of friends and family were awaiting her arrival.
The First Cry
When the passengers heard her cry for the first time, they all erupted in cheers. Brooks couldn’t believe how happy all of these strangers were for him. This huge obstacle ended with Brooks finally witnessing the birth of Millie.
The most important thing is Haley and Millie’s health. They are both doing great, Haley’s blood pressure stabilized after the birth and Millie was a healthy weight at 7 pounds 6 ounces. The fact that Brooks was on his way home also made Haley feel better.
Everything truly happens for a reason- this story is proof! The moment Brooks arrived at the hospital was obviously an incredibly special one. He asked all 17 of their family and friends to leave the room so that he could have a moment of privacy with his wife and newborn baby.
At last, when Brooks walked in, Haley wrote, “When he walked in at 7:20 it was just Millie and me. He picked her up and held her for five minutes and kept saying ‘wow I can’t believe we just had a baby’ but the entire time I was already dreading him leaving 4 days later.”
Brooks finally said hello to Millie for the first time. He held her in his arms and said, “She is perfect.” Unfortunately, he only 4 days at home with his girls before he had to go back to base. Brooks became the best father ever, waking up at all hours for Millie, holding her for hours on end and changing endless diapers.
A soldier’s job is definitely not an easy one. They must protect their country every day and make sacrifices, no matter how hard. Four short days later, Brooks tearfully said goodbye to Haley and Millie and flew back to continue training.
Chasing His Dream
Although it was extremely difficult, he knew he had to chase his dream of becoming a soldier. Servicemen and women evoke a sense of respect and pride in all Americans. Our country is safe because of these brave soldiers, without them our lives would be completely different.
We wouldn’t go about each day in the way we do, that’s for sure. They have to face life in a warzone and deal with being away from their loved ones for long stretches of time. Brooks Lindsey shows us all what a committed soldier looks like, willing to do whatever it takes to protect his family and his country.
The Phone Call
When asked about the birth, Brooks said, “My mom called me and said Haley was starting to push. At first they said no videos, but then when they found out what was going on and she was FaceTiming me, they let me watch the whole thing.”
In terms of things working out, Haley saw it all as a blessing in disguise, saying, “Honestly it was a blessing that he was delayed because he would’ve been in the air and he wouldn’t have known anything at all. I don’t think that has anything on seeing it.”
Among the bystanders at the airport who saw Brooks watched the birth of his daughter was Tracy Dover. She took a photo of him and posted it to her Facebook page, saying, “This Army soldier was on my delayed flight home yesterday to MS. He had to watch the birth of his daughter on FaceTime. He was crying and our hearts were breaking. We all gave him space. When we heard the baby cry, we all rejoiced for him. I wanted to share this because I never want us to forget about our soldiers who serve us every day and the sacrifices they make.”
As for the reasoning she had about posting the photo of Brooks, Tracy said on her Facebook, “I never want us to forget about our soldiers who serve us every day and the sacrifices they make.”
Later on, Haley also took to Facebook to share a video of Brooks’ reaction. Until now, it has gained almost 114,000 shares. In addition, Haley shared how thankful she was for the “tremendous” love and support her “little family” has gotten both online and in person. “Thank y’all so much for the tremendous amount of love and support for our little family!!”
“We cannot believe how far and wide this story has traveled!” Haley continued. “I really hope it gives other military families hope for getting their loved ones home in an emergency or other life change! It may [not have gone] exactly how we planned, but it is absolutely perfect the way it is! Thank you, Tracy Dover, for sharing this moment with us and everyone!!”
Several days later, Haley posted a photo of their daughter and jokingly wrote, “Second night with [the] baby must be tougher than the field.” The sweet moment helped showcase the many sacrifices soldiers need to make on a regular basis.
