Catherine Svilicic never thought that her rescue dog would be aggressive towards her 17-month old baby. Mothers are often overprotective of their children. So, it is not surprising to see Catherine scared when she found her daughter being tossed around. She was afraid that their new family member would harm her daughter and leave marks on her skin or worse. On that very day, Catherine and her daughter ran to the shelter, but what were the intentions of their new dog after it started showing those acts of aggression?
One Strange Morning
Catherine Svilicic decided to adopt a rescue Doberman as a house pet. Catherine knew that her dog would make for a loving addition to her family. She even imagined their new family member would bond with her baby daughter and become the best of friends. However, her hopes for a beautiful relationship between the two of them unexpectedly changed one day in her very own backyard.
Catherine knew that rescues typically come from abusive or negligent families or previous owners. These situations can really change a dog’s behavior. However, she decided to take the chance. For rescue organizations, taking a chance on these abused animals can help them live a better life.
More Dangerous Breeds
Nipping is a common occurrence with dogs. Most canines like to nip and lick their humans as a way of showing their affection. However, other people believe that dogs can become hostile thanks to their genetic makeup.
Adding To The Family
The Svilicics decided that it’s time to add a new member to their family by adopting a pet. Catherine set off to adopt a dog after she gave birth to her daughter Charlotte. Catherine wanted to forge a close relationship with their new family member for Charlotte.
Making The Big Decision
The family knew that adopting a rescue dog is a good thing to do. They believe that by rescuing, they would be able to give a neglected and abused animal a better life. The family was blessed with a healthy child; they feel that they would be lucky enough to provide a better life for their adopted family member as well.
Calling the Shelter
So, Catherine called the nearest dog shelter to inquire about adoption and the overall procedure. As soon as they heard about the available animals, Catherine decided to adopt a Doberman Pinscher and named him Khan. As soon as she signed the adoption papers, it was official that Khan was a part of their family.
Catherine had her reasons for adopting a Doberman Pinscher. Primarily, she wanted a pet to protect her family. Perhaps the idea of a rescue gave her some hesitation as she signed the papers for adoption. Regardless, she decided to take the chance.
Fitting The Mold?
Most people know that Rottweilers, Dobermans, and Pitbulls have always been considered to be aggressive dogs. People even have records regarding these incidents. Would her dog behave in the way people always thought it would?
Lessons From Pet Dogs
Catherine hoped that the addition of a new family member would teach her baby valuable lessons like learning to love, sharing, and responsibility to care for animals. A lot of people knew that the family would be welcoming a new member soon, but they weren’t expecting Catherine’s choice of breed.
Falling In Love
Despite hearing Khan’s brutal background, Catherine knew it was love at first sight. She was very happy to bring back a special dog for her family. Catherine was aware that her decision to adopt a Rottweiler comes with several risks that they should be aware of.
One of the risks that they were aware of was that the dog was a large one. That means it can potentially harm the baby if they weren’t careful. However, Catherine overlooked the risk. If it weren’t for her, Khan would be put down a week after! For Khan, it was a new life for him and the second shot at being cared for – this time, with a family that is ready to welcome him.
Seemingly Normal Day
Everything seemed to start smoothly for the Svilicics and Khan. They trained him during his first few days. However, everything changed on the 4th day of Khan’s stay with them. The family noticed that Khan wasn’t being his usual self.
That fateful day started with the usual playtime on their backyard. Charlotte was with Khan while her parents were watching from a far. Charlotte and Khan were doing their usual routine. However, things suddenly changed for them on this day.
Trouble In The Yard
Charlotte and Khan started running around the backyard together when things changed. They were not being loud or crazy, but Khan’s temperament drastically changed all of a sudden.
Wild Actions During Playtime
Catherine was very happy to see Charlotte and Khan playing. She felt reassured that adopting Khan was the best decision that she has ever made. However, things seemed to change at that very moment.
Out Of Character
Khan started acting wildly and aggressively. It seems like it was no longer a normal playtime for the two. Something was off with the scene. Khan stopped playing at once and made a grab for Charlotte.
Khan Acting Wild
Catherine was totally shocked to see the sudden change of atmosphere. She was very confused as to what had set Khan off, and how he suddenly changed into an aggressive dog. She knew Charlotte would never provoke Khan. But why is Khan grabbing her in such manner? Could this be what other people have been telling her about Khan’s breed?
She watched how Khan tossed Charlotte across their backyard. Catherine and everyone around her were starting to panic. The scene happening in front of them was simply unbelievable. While everyone was still shell-shocked, Charlotte appeared to be unaffected and went on to wander around the grass.
Just The Beginning
Why is Khan acting like Charlotte was a threat? Catherine watched her dog drag her daughter and kept hoping that Khan would stop doing so. Unfortunately, Catherine had to intervene or else Khan might have done something that she would regret even more.
The scene in front of them made it look like Khan was having a fit of rage. The dog acted a lot more aggressive than he usually was. At this very moment, things went haywire. He ferociously bit into her diaper and tossed her back and forth.
Shock And Devastation
Catherine was indeed aware that a dog like Khan has the ability to be aggressive. But she never thought that she would be seeing him like this, let alone begin tossing her daughter around like a toy. This scene left Catherine devastated.
Of course, she was very angry with Khan for beating her innocent baby. However, there was a part of Catherine telling her that there is something else going on. Little did she know, her suspicion was completely true.
Frozen In Horror
Their supposed playtime turned into something aggressive! Catherine was so shocked while she watched as things slowly unfolded in front of her eyes. Her shock made that very moment a nightmare. This was just not the reality she was expecting.
Denial Of Sorts
Her intuition led her to believe that there was more to the situation and that perhaps her innocent baby was truly in danger. Catherine was nailed to the floor as she stood there, frozen and in denial. She knew this wasn’t real. Catherine hoped and prayed that she did not bring danger into her home.
Like A Rag Doll
Catherine noted that her baby was the target when the flailing went extreme. That moment, Khan bit Charlotte’s diaper. His teeth had sunk into her diaper. With all his strength, Khan tossed her like “a rag doll.” It was indeed a terrifying sight!
The family knew that they were lucky because Khan’s teeth didn’t go into her skin, especially on her face. Catherine felt guilt creeping into her. She could not imagine if her baby would be needing plastic surgery all because of Khan. They were all shocked to see how Charlotte was behaving, however. She was calm the whole time. Perhaps, she understood Khan’s good intention from the very beginning.
Although she wasn’t crying, Charlotte appeared flustered. Catherine knew she needed to think fast and grabbed her distressed daughter. Suddenly, something happened to Khan which made the whole family even more confused.
Everyone was surprised to see Charlotte calm, and that she was not even crying at all. However, the other members of the family were still in a state of panic. Charlotte’s mother even said, “Had I not seen it with my very own eyes, I’d never have believed it.” Christine quickly ran to Charlotte and carried her to the shelter. Khan barked frantically and suddenly collapsed.
More To The Story
To her horror, Catherine realized that her suspicion was actually spot on. Maybe, Khan was protecting Charlotte from impending harm the entire time. Khan was whimpering non-stop. However, what was going on?
Not Quite Over
Something unusual was happening. Khan wouldn’t collapse if there was nothing wrong. The dog started crying. Everyone was starting to get confused. No one was sure what was actually going on.
Catherine quickly scanned over Charlotte’s body for bruises or cuts. Surprisingly, they couldn’t see any injuries. Charlotte seemed to be unharmed. Clearly, Catherine was a lot more upset about the situation than her peaceful baby. Charlotte remained unscathed, but their dog Khan was not doing well.
The dog continued crying and then suddenly fell unconscious to the ground. That scene made Catherine panic even more. She tried looking into her dog’s dying eyes, and realized that he was only protecting Charlotte from something bad. However, there did not have a lot of time as he needed help fast.
The family finally realized what was happening. Khan wasn’t a ferocious assailant, but rather, he was the hero protecting Charlotte. It turned out that there was a venomous creature lurking around their backyard. Even though he was only with them for short time, he became the protector that Catherine had hoped for from the day of his adoption.
Khan’s condition got worse. Catherine knew that she need to save him. She saw his tremendous sacrifice her daughter. The family thought that it might already be too late to save their heroic dog. Was it?
Khan was immediately paralyzed because of the poisonous venom. Though Khan came from an aggressive breed and was a sturdy young dog, his body was not able to handle the strong venom flowing into his body. When signing his adoption paper, Catherine was dedicated to take care of Khan as a part of their family. At that very moment, she knew that he needed her the most. At that time, she knew there were only a few people who would be able to save Khan.
Determined To Save Khan
While the family was still in a state of shock, Catherine immediately carried her lifeless dog while another family member had taken Charlotte away. As she was carrying Khan, she saw Khan’s tongue hanging out of his mouth, gasping for air. She can hear someone insisting that it was too late for him, though Catherine paid no heed and went her way.
Every Minute Counted
Look at it this way: if they waited any longer, maybe they would have lost Khan. Watching him breathing hard, Catherine believed that Khan still had a chance to survive. With all her strength, she carried her large Doberman into her car and sped out to the nearest vet. While on the way, she could hear Khan’s breath getting shallower. Catherine panicked, but still hoped that she could make it time.
Speeding For Life
As Catherine stepped on the gas, she looked at her new dog. She hoped that she would be able to give him the kind of life she promised him. She recalled the Khan’s heroic moment, sacrificing himself for sweet Charlotte. With these thoughts in mind, breaking the traffic rules did not matter at that moment. She was more worried for her dog. Later on, Catherine said, “I never knew I was able to drive this well. I guess adrenaline does its thing.”
Urgent Medical Care
After breaking a few traffic laws, they arrived at the vet’s office. Catherine immediately jumped out of her car, carrying the lifeless Khan. Every minute counted at that very moment – there was no time to waste. Catherine yelled for an anti-venom as soon she entered the vet’s office. The medical staff and the vets immediately went to her side and rushed to help Khan. They knew that the dog was in a critical condition and removing the toxins inside Khan’s body was their topmost priority.
A while after, Catherine realized that she was acting with adrenaline coursing through her body. Thinking about her actions, she said, “If you asked me to carry his weight right now, I don’t think I’d be able to do it.” Maybe it was her motherly instincts that had led her to protect her new baby. After just four days, Khan was able to become a part of their family and even saved his human sister from the poisonous creature.
Hoping For The Best
By looking at Khan’s eyes, Catherine could see the unconditional love Khan had for them. She could clearly see that he only wanted to protect Charlotte. He was able to become a part of their family. However, at this moment, it was their turn to give back the love that Khan had for them. Charlotte is now safe, so Catherine gave her full attention to Khan. When the vets took over, Catherine was left there crying and helpless. She could only pray for his safe recovery.
Finding Out About Khan
From that time on, Catherine needed to find patience within her as she waited for the vet to save Khan. Of course, she knew that the experts were doing all they could for Khan, but it didn’t stop her from worrying. She felt sick to her core, praying and hoping for Khan’s health. The vets saw a pacing Catherine and immediately updated her about Khan’s current health status. Catherine immediately went to them, filled with endless questions about her beloved dog.
Sadly, all they can tell her was that they were uncertain if Khan could make it. He told her, “We don’t know yet, madam. We did what we could, but now his body has to fight the poison. The anti-venom will certainly help, but we don’t know to what extent. It’s best that you come back tomorrow morning.” These words made her hopes sank. Catherine was hoping for some positive news. Still, Catherine continued to hope for Khan’s survival.
As she left the vet’s offices, her mind kept wandering to her poor dog. She continued to recall all the events in her head. Her mind kept racing back to Khan, thus making it impossible for her to sleep. Christine watched Charlotte who was in deep sleep and realized, she never thought that things would happen this way. She felt an overwhelming gratitude towards her dog for keeping her daughter safe and sound. Nonetheless, she also felt a deep wave of guilt because she wasn’t able to do more for Khan who risked his life for her daughter.
Starting Bright And Early
As soon as the morning came, Catherine went out early. She wasn’t able to sleep a wink but she got ready anyway. She went on with her usual day, sent her kids to school, and finally visited Khan. Considering every that went down, she wanted to be the first person to hear the good news about Khan.
Hearing The News
While waiting for the update, Catherine hoped that something good would happen despite the tragic situation. She couldn’t stop her mind from going back and forth. Moreover, she knew her patience was running thin. She approached the receptionist and asked if there were any news about her dog. Luckily, there was one, and they could finally talk about Khan’s current health.
Deadly Backyard Creature
The vets started telling her about Khan’s attacker before proceeding to discuss his current condition. The vets told her that the predator was a deadly creature lurking that had been lurking in her backyard without their knowledge. She was then able to imagine the alternative, the more tragic alternative if that creature bit one of her kids. Maybe then, she wouldn’t be sitting in the vet’s clinic but rather, in a hospital emergency room.
Khan’s animal instinct helped him save Charlotte from a Mulga snake. It is true that many people see Dobermans as aggressive breed – though with Khan’s heroic act, this accusation falls short. These dogs are very loyal to their owners. Khan risked his life to save Charlotte from harm! He showed his immense love for his family. And perhaps, it was also a way for Khan to give back the love that his new family had given him.
Chance Of Survival
The vets finally updated Christine on Khan’s current situation. There is a big chance that Khan would die because of the powerful venom of the Mulga. The entire family had been looking forward to his quick recovery, but things weren’t going according to plan at that moment. They couldn’t even fathom what it would have been like if it was Charlotte who had been bitten. Due of Khan’s bravery, the family felt that Khan deserved another shot at life and to completely regain his health.
Waiting For The Doctors
As they waited for the news, the family hoped and prayed for good news. Khan’s life was in the hands of the vets. The vets were giving their best to remove all the snake venom inside Khan’s body. “He saved her life by risking his own. From now on, he’s Khan the Wonder Dog,” Catherine said as she recalled Khan’s heroic deed. The family had been anxiously waiting to hear a positive update about their wonder dog. One day, their prayers were finally answered when Catherine received a call from the vet’s office.
The Dog’s Fate
They finally heard what they wanted to hear. The family felt like they had been waiting for centuries to hear that all was well. Regardless of the short time they spent, Khan had become a part of their family. They fell in love with him even more after he saved Charlotte’s life. The vets had given Khan an anti-venom to counter the poison inside his system, and they hoped it worked wonders.
A Better Life
With his adoption, the family hoped to give a rescue another shot at life. When Catherine’s family had picked up Khan, they were told that the dog had been abused and neglected. Although a loving family had taken him in, Khan had not been able to enjoy his life with them because of this incident. The family desperately prayed for his healthy recovery, so that they can make up for all the sufferings Khan had gone through in his life.
Almost Put Down
If it weren’t for their family, Khan might have been put to sleep. When he first arrived at the shelter, Khan was in horrible shape. You could clearly see the sign of abuse. Catherine once spoke of his previous condition: “When Kerry Kinder (Doberinling Boarding Kennels owner) rescued him, he was starving, had broken ribs and had been beaten – he was an abused dog…It was borderline on whether or not he should be put down because he was in such a bad way.”
Looking back on Khan’s abusive background, Catherine was able to understand why Khan had behaved that way around her child. She clarified, “He was starving for attention and wanted to be loved because he came from an abused home, so I’m not surprised about what he has done at his new home.” With the thoughts of Khan’s abusive past, Catherine was determined to give Khan a better chance at life. Thus, Catherine needed to talk to her dog’s vet.
Calling The Vet
As she was calling the vet, Catherine kept praying that they would finally get some good news. At first, the vet only told her that Khan had gotten sick the night before. This piece of information made Catherine feel dread all over her body. She just wanted to know if her dog had been doing well so, that she could give Khan a better life, a safe and warm home, and a loving family that will care for him with all that they could. The Svilicics just really wanted to return the favor after Khan saved Charlotte.
The Big News
The vet had kept Catherine on the line while she was talking to her team. At that moment, they were trying to save Khan. Catherine eagerly waited as she held her phone for dear life. She just wanted to hear good news about Khan’s condition. Finally, the long wait was over.
Sigh Of Relief
The vet finally shared that Khan was finally getting stronger. He was still weak, but he was nonetheless making a progress. The snake’s venom was finally out of his system. Catherine finally shed the tears of relief that she had been holding. But the good news doesn’t stop there.
Catherine needed to hear the last confirmation that Khan was finally on his way to the road of recovery, that they could finally take him back home. It wasn’t enough to know that their dog was okay. When will they tell her that her dog was finally ready to go home to them?
Finally, the vet gave the confirmation that Khan would come back home to them soon. The family now had the chance to make everything up to their wonder dog after he saved Charlotte from harm.
According To Experts
Thanks to a reptile expert, we finally know what could have happened. Khan was able to survive a fatal attack. The snake was not able to inject enough venom to kill the Doberman. If the snake would have bitten Khan with a tighter grip, then maybe Khan wouldn’t be there with them. Now, what would have happened to the Svilicic family?
Back To The Vet
Because of her unwavering dedication, Catherine went to the vet again so she could hear more about the updates of Khan’s health condition. She waited until she could hear the answers that she had been waiting for.
The family received more than just great news. Khan was quickly recovering, which impressed his attending vets. The family was so excited to be reunited with their heroic Khan!
Finally, the family could be with their dog and move on from the tragic moment in their life. The family was so excited to be reunited with Khan. They wanted to show how much they love him, and they finally gave the life he deserved. Catherine made a promise to herself as well.
Catherine was determined to protect Khan as if he was her own son. How could she not when it was because of Khan that her daughter was alive and healthy. Khan now shared a bond with his new family, a bond that would most probably never be broken. Catherine hoped that one day she can see Khan and Charlotte grow up together.
The Deadly Creature
The creature that was responsible of all this was called Mulga. This animal turned out to be a deadly snake. It’s not your ordinary snake, that’s for sure. But what makes it so dangerous?
Well, if you haven’t heard of Mulga snake, they are well-known for their venom. They are considered to be one of the deadliest snakes in Australia. With its brown color, it can easily camouflage with the ground. It is no wonder that Khan was the only who was able to spot it.
Its Powerful Attack
It is something that you should really fear. Its venom can easily kill an adult in just a few minutes!
Luckily, Khan was able to catch the snake before it bit Charlotte. The little girl could have been an easy target, considering the fact that she was only a baby. Khan indeed saved her.
The story of Khan saving Charlotte sounds like a familiar tale to many dog lovers. Perhaps you have even heard of Brutis. He was only 7 when he made history in 2004. This heroic golden retriever grabbed the coral snake that was slowly approaching a child. Brutis suffered a fatal bite, however. He was awarded the National Hero Dog Award in Los Angeles for his heroic act.
Another heroic story happened during the Hurricane Katrina. During this national tragedy, there were some heroes who shone the brightest. One of them is the black lab who shared the name of the typhoon. Katrina the Labrador saved a drowning man during the floods. Luckily, they were found by rescue teams who saved them both. Katrina was honored in the same year and even received a standing ovation during the Genesis Award.
Shana, a part German Shepherd and part wolf dog once saved an elderly couple during a snow storm. When the snow storm was getting strong, she saw an elderly couple who were trapped. She immediately dug a tunnel to pull them out to safety.
Took A Bullet For Family
When a masked man broke into the Patel’s residence, their German Shepherd immediately went to action. Moti barked at the intruder, and he was even shot at by before the person took off. Luckily, Moti was able to recover. This canine was awarded the 2007 Dog of The Year Award.
Nearly Fatal Crash
The 2006 Dog of the Year was Honey, and she accomplished her heroic deed by saving her owner Michael Bosch who had been trapped under an upside down SUV that crashed into the ravine. Michael used all his strength to free the 5-month-old Honey with the hopes that she would call someone to rescue him. Honey was able to do so! The English Cocker Spaniel found someone about a half mile away and brought this man to the accident site. This man immediately called a rescue unit that would help them save Michael.
Amazing Service Dog
A former soldier was unfortunately stuck in the mud after his wheelchair dug deep into it, thus making it hard for him to move. Luckily, Gareth Jones’ service dog was ready to help him. Jones threw a rope toward the 4-year-old golden retriever. This dog immediately pulled him out of the mud. Jones praised his dog for his heroic deed. “He didn’t let go until I was clear. He knew exactly what he was doing.”
Stillman Award Winner
Just like in the movies, this Rottweiler named Eve pulled her paralyzed paraplegic owner from a burning vehicle. Eve didn’t even stop there – she also dragged her owner until she was able to reach the safe zone. Because of her heroic deed, the Sittlman Award was given to her for her bravery.
Aside from Hurricane Katrina, another disaster struck where dogs were able to save the lives of many. During the 9/11 Terrorist attack, dogs have helped many people who were buried under the debris of the fallen buildings. Officer James Symington’s dog Trakr was able to save the last survivor by digging through 30 feet of unstable debris. Because of his efforts, the team decided to clone him for other police rescue missions.
If you happen to live in swampy areas, you never know what dangers wait for you in your home. Ruth Gay can attest to this. The 85-year-old woman fell into the swamp when she was walking her dog Blue, an Australian Blue Heeler. Suddenly, an alligator made his way to Gay, and Blue went into the swamp to fight until the alligator moved away from them. Because of this, Blue was awarded as “Dog Hero of the Year” award for the year 2001.
Siberian Husky Makes Incredible Rescue

Neo ran out for help to the next building and he led people back to their place. As soon as these people saw what was going on, they immediately called an ambulance. Snead was able to recover fully, thanks to Neo.
Kankuntu Takes On Pirates
Kankuntu saved his family from a band of armed pirates. Many people would think it’s the stuff of fiction but it did happen. According to the owner Peter Lee, they were about to be hijacked at sea on his yacht. Lee says his dog “thinks he’s a lion.” The dog attacked the gunman to protect his owner! The gunman was able to escape, but also he stabbed Kankuntu on the shoulder blades. Thankfully, the dog was able to recover from the incident.
Dog Dials 911
This heartwarming story touched many people. Kevin Wagner was a diabetic man. One time, he was already experiencing seizures and collapsed right in front of his dog Belle. Belle hit 911 on Weaver’s phone. Kevin was immensely grateful. “There’s no doubt in my mind that I’d be dead if I didn’t have Belle,” he said. Belle was the first dog to ever receive the VITA’s Wireless Samaritan Award. To clear things up, she was trained to dial for emergency incidents.
Toby Saves Choking Owner
The 2007 Dog of the Year awardee, Toby the Golden Retriever once saved his owner when she started choking. Toby immediately jumped onto his owner and forced the piece of apple out of her throat. This dog was smart enough to know how to save the life of his owner!
She was able to win the Heroic Hearing Dog of the Year. It may seem bizarre but the said award does exist. Nellie, the 4-year-old lab once alerted her deaf owner because of an intruder who had come into the premises. Because of her bravery, Nellie indeed deserves the award. Good girl!
