Some high school football teams come with legacies and traditions that go from the very beginning of the sport. On the other hand, some dynasties did not take hold until the past couple of decades. Many programs have produced NFL legends who got to play under the Friday night lights! Some great players have been lost to time and only remembered by their photo in a trophy case. Maine — Marshwood High School
Rod Wotton, the former head coach at the Marshwood High School in South Berwick, led the football team to 6 consecutive state championships from 1974 until 1979. The ‘80s were nearly as good for the team. From 1983 to 1986, they had 7 state titles, four of which they won from 1983 to 1986. The current coach is Alex Rotsko, and he has been working to bring back the team’s glory days. He helped the team get 4 state titles in the span of 9 seasons! Overall, the public school football team has 21 state titles.

Vermont — Hartford High School
Mike Stone, the former coach, made a dynasty from one of the tinier schools in the Vermont Division I. This includes consecutive season wins in 2011 and 2012! He won a state title during his first season back in 1986 and then led the team to straight victories from 1990 to 1993. Hartford, with its 12 state championships, is the home of 5 Gatorade Player of the Year awardees as well.

It seems like Sheridan High likes to take state titles in hoards! The football program boasts of 26 state titles, 16 of which came in streaks of 2, 3 or 4 consecutive championships. They won 5 of those in the 2010s. It is also the alma mater of the 5’6”, 148-pound tailback/defensive back Willis Smith, who played 9 games for the New York Giants back in 1934.

Everett High was a dominant team early in the days of football. By 1915, they already had 9 state titles.They won 4 state titles in the ‘60s and suffered a 32-year drought until they reclaimed the state title in 1997. That success then kicked off a streak of 13 titles in only 20 seasons. All of these came under the leadership of head coach John DiBiaso. We bet they will increase their 28 state titles in the future!

Massachusetts — Everett High School
Montana — Butte High School
Butte took home its first state title of 26 in 1900 and the most recent one in 2012. The longest gap it had between titles would be from 1941 to 1967. The high school might still have the highest number of state titles in Montana, but it has not gotten back-to-back titles ever since 1967 and 1968. Butte has a rivalry with Butte Central, which was the topic of the 1989 book by Patrick Kearney called “Butte’s Big Game.”

The best high school football coach New Hampshire has ever seen would be none other than head coach Chuck Lenahan of Plymouth High. He was hired in 1971 and did not win a game during his first season but later took home 19 state titles in 39 years. This includes 13 unbeaten seasons as well as two different win streaks of 46 and 47 games. The school has 24 state championships under its belt.

He is one of the careers wins leaders of New York.

Harlan High head coach Curt Bladt took home 11 of the school’s 12 state championships. He had been an assistant coach at Harlon for a decade before he finally became its head coach in 1978. He is one of the winningest coaches the nation has ever seen. NFL player Billy Cundiff was the quarterback during the 1997 state championship team. He is the only Harlan graduate to make the NFL roster.

Bishop Hendricken has somehow churned out NFL talents decade after decade. This includes Steve Furness of Pittsburgh and Will Blackmon of the Giants. Talented coach Ron Mosca worked as an assistant coach at the school for 12 years until he got promoted in 1990. He led the team to 3 state titles. In 2019, the school went 10-0 and took home its first state championship since 2014.

South Dakota — Washington High School
The 42 state championships of Washington High School are the highest among all American high schools. The first 14 of these came under coach Howard Wood. Washington also has a stunning streak of 14 consecutive titles from 1952 to 1965. The record title haul of the team also comes with 33 years without any titles. The draught happened from 1976 to 2009.

South Dakota — Washington High School
Connecticut — New Canaan High School
The current New Canaan High head coach is none other than Lou Marinelli, who is in his 39th season. They have 12 state titles under his name. He is the career leader for wins in Connecticut as well. In 2019, the school, which boasts of 22 state championships, saw its first product go on to make an NFL roster in the form of Zach Allen who is the defensive end for the Arizona Cardinals.

Rex Henderson, the current Artesia head coach, is the 3rd member of the family to coach the Bulldogs after his grandfather L.G. Henderson and uncle Cooper Henderson. They have all won state titles for the high school. His grandfather won 5 in 6 seasons, Cooper took home 14 in 27 seasons, and Rex won the 2017 state title after seeing 8 state titles while he worked as the assistant coach.

Newark High has yet to win a state title ever since 2004. The school has not reached the championship game since 2011 either, but its record of 10 state titles is still the most titles in the state. Former coach Butch Simpson led the team for 39 years and took home 9 state championships, which includes 5 consecutive titles from 1997 to 2001. In 1998, the state team featured Kwame Harris, Rich Parson, and Orien Harris!

Cherry Creek High has 9 state championships to its name. Valor Christian, which produced Christian McCaffrey, is right on its tail with 8 state titles, however. Cherry Creek took home its first 3 state titles with Fred Tesone before he had to give way to Mike Woolford, who then won 5 titles in 10 years. This includes three straight titles from 1994 to 1996.

Alaska high school football begins and finishes the season a month earlier than the other states do. It only got its own state championship game in 1990! The Cougars have since taken home 6 titles since then. They produced Mark Schlereth and Brandon Drumm as well. In only 7 seasons, ex-head coach Byron Wilson managed to snag 4 state titles. It includes 3 straight wins from 1997 to 1999!

North Dakota — Bismarck High School
Consistency has been important for Bismarck High, which only had 2 coaches ever since 1973. Mark Gibson, the current coach, has been in the position since 1998 and won 6 of its 13 state titles. He won consecutive titles 4 times but has yet to get 3 straight titles. The greatest player of the school has to be Greg Eslinger!

North Dakota — Bismarck High School

Skyline High is the leader in Utah with its 14 state championships. It has appeared in the state championship game 20 times as well, incurring 4 straight losses from 2000 to 2003. The school stadium has been named after coach Roger Dupaix, the winningest coach in all of Utah history. The top recruits from the school often go to BUY, and this includes quarterback Brandon Doman.

Highland High School has produced top players for more than 40 years. This can be traced back to Pittsburg running back Merril Hoge to the New Orleans quarterback/playmaker Taysom Hill. The school also has a fantastic coaching legacy. Future FBS and NFL head coach Dirk Koetter both played and coached at the school. FBS head coach Steve Kragthorpe was also its product!

It would be hard to match the consistency of the football coaching ranks of Jesuit High. They had the same 2 coaches for 53 of the past 60 years. In 2006, the team went 13-0 and made state record with their standing. It is also interesting to note that they have the best apparel contract in high school football. Nike dresses them up for free! At the moment, the school has 6 state titles to its name.

Eden Prairie has a dynasty built under the help of Mike Grant, the child of Minnesota Vikings head coach Bud Grant. The younger man took home back-to-back titles two times and took home 4 straight state championships from 2011 to 2014. This particular stretch had been brutal because Blake Cashman and Ryan Connelly were both on the team! The school currently has 11 state titles under its belt.

Head coach Tom Taraska helped Arrowhead High get to the state championship games 9 times in 29 seasons. They won 4 of these. No one is surprised to hear that the school has many talented defensive and offensive linemen. At the moment, Ben Bredeson is a junior offensive guard at the University of Michigan. He is already been selected for the All-Big Ten twice! The school boasts of 6 state titles.

The football program of the Smith Center High School has been chronicled in Joe Drape’s best-selling book called “Our Boys: A Perfect Season on the Plains.” The street where the institution stands is Roger Barta Way, named after the famous head coach who was dubbed the national coach of the year back in 2007. Smith Center once had a 79-game streak from 2004 to 2009, the longest in American history! It has 10 state titles at the moment.

Wheeling Central Catholic High is a title away from going to a tie with Parkersburg High for the state record of 17 titles. Parkersburg did win its first 8 state titles by “popular acclaim” or voting among the sportswriters of the state. In 2018, top defensive player Andy Murray went on to be the first two-time winner of the Huff Award. Current coach Mike Young has 7 state titles since he took over in 2005.

West Virginia — Wheeling Central Catholic High School
Nebraska — Creighton Preparatory School
Creighton Prep head coach Tom Jaworksi did not lose in 39 seasons! He won 9 state titles that time and pumped out a stream of NFL football players. He retired as the winningest coach of Nebraska history. The school has not won a state title ever since 2004. A decade later, the team just won the state semifinals when head coach Chris Nizzi got arrested for hitting a 17-year-old girl and got fired.

The 1957 team of Little Rock Central won the 6th straight state title and brought home one of its 2 national championships. It is considered the best high school football team Arkansas has ever seen. Coach Jimmy Teague of Reidsville High is on his second stint with the team. He won 4 state titles during his first run and has already won one more this time. He had a 55-game streak from 2007 to 2009 and produced 2 NFL players: Na Brown and Jerome Simpson. The 19 state titles of Reidsville is the state record in North Carolina.

Webb City High head coach John Roderique has held the position for the past 23 years. He won 10 of the 14 state titles owned by the school. He was a linebacker for the team in the early ‘80s and went on to play football at Pittsburgh State for University of Minnesota head coach Jerry Kill, who himself took the high school to a state title in 1989. In 2011 and 2012, Roderqiue’s son John was the quarterback of the 2011 and 2012 teams, which took home the state titles in those years.

Longtime Hampton High coach Mike Smith is #3 when it comes to career wins in the nation. The Crabbers are some of the most successful programs in the US as well. As a coach, Smith is now on his 10th president. Yes, he started when Lyndon B. Johnson was in power! In the ‘90s, college recruitment for QB Ronald Curry was very heated. The two-sport star ended up committing to Virginia before switching over to North Carolina at the last minute. The school boasts of 17 state titles.

There are nearly half a dozen high school football teams in Michigan that can qualify for the best in the state. Catholic Central High deserves the title, however, because it won 10 state titles during the playoff era under the guidance of coach Tom Mach. It has since made it to the championship games 6 more times and took home 4 more state titles for a total of 14.

Montclair High has the highest number of state titles in New Jersey and has produced NFL players ever since the ‘50s. The school has a great football tradition that began in the ‘40s, winning 7 titles during that decade alone. The undefeated 1946 team featured Buzz Aldrin, who we all know was the second person to ever make it on the moon back in 1969!

Wait until you hear just how much talent is going into South Panola High. Three coaches have all won state titles. While it won the national title in 2010, many would agree that the 1993 team was the best team it ever had. The team was led by coach Willis Wright, went 15-0, and featured Deshea Townsend and Dywanne Rudd.

Louisiana — John Curtis Christian High School
J.T. Curtis, the son of the school founder, is the only coach in the school history to have won a state title, but he got 25 of them! In 2019, he entered his 51st season with the John Curtis Christian High. In 2013, they were supposed to have one more title, but this got stripped when it was discovered that there was an ineligible player on the team. The greatest player of the school might be Joe McKnight, who was on the 2004 to 2006 teams.

In 2011, Louisville Trinity High coach Bob Beatty was dubbed the USA Today Coach of the Year. He won 13 state titles in 18 seasons! The 50-game win streak of the Shamrocks from 1988 to 1991 is the lengthiest in Kentucky history. The school won its first state title in 1967, and there has never been a decade in which they did not add one more championship to their name. The longest gap was 7 years.

Pennsylvania did not switch to a true playoff system before 1988. True state championships before that can be hard to quantify since they came from a general consensus, voting, or rating. Central Catholic High has 4 state championships to its name. The greatest player in school history is hard to determine, but we want you to know that Hall of Famer Dan Marino graduated from this school in 1979!

Saguaro won the 6th straight state championship back in 2018. The team raked in everything even after the national top defensive back Kelee Ringo got kicked off the team in the middle of the season. Despite all of this, Saguaro did win its first state title in 1995 on the back of none other than NFL legend Mike Brown! At the moment, the school has 12 state championships.

Cathedral High is only behind Bishop Chatard in state championships by one. However, its success has come consistently in bigger divisions. Under the guidance of coach Rick Streiff, the team won 4 state titles in that decades, but its 2006 title started a streak of dominance the state had not seen before. Cathedral took home 7 state titles from 2006 to 2016, which includes 5 straight wins from 2010 to 2014.

Joliet Catholic High holds the Illinois record with its 14 state titles. However, its 2018 championship win was surprising since it came after 4 regular-season losses. The program has produced several Super Bowl winners in the past. The list includes the likes of Daniel Eugene “Rudy” Ruettiger and Sean Astin.

Byrnes High had been open for 20 years before its first state title in 1976. It was the first of three in the following decade. After waiting for 16 years for the next one, Byrnes took home 8 state titles from 2002 to 2011. The first four of those were spearheaded by Bobby Bentley, while the other half by Chris Miller. In 2009, Byrnes kicked off the season as the top team in the nation! The school has 11 state titles.

State championships do not really apply in D.C. thanks to the location, but there is topnotch football in this part of the country. H.D. Woodson knows that better than other schools in the area! Athletic director and coach Bob Headen held the position for 28 years and mentored the likes of Byron Leftwich and Orlando Brown in the past. The school as 15 DCIAA championships.

Brentwood Academy became a football powerhouse and pumped out a stream of NFL players like Jalen Ramsey and Derek Barnett. Brentwood seems to be at their top form during the biggest game. Scott Wells dominated the Packers in their 2011 Super Bowl win as well. Anyway, the private school boasts of 14 state championships!

Bellevue High brought an end to the 151-game win streak of De La Salle High in 2004. Head coach Butch Goncharoff won 11 state titles in 16 seasons but had to step down in 2017. That was the year Bellevue got stripped of its 2012 and 2013 state titles and received a 4-year postseason ban for violating transfer and recruitment rules. The 2004 and 2005 teams featured David Decastro and Stephen Schilling. The school has brought home 12 state championships.

St. Louis School boasts of the most dominant Hawaiian high school football program. It produced Marcus Mariota as well as Tua Tagovailoa. In 1995, the state championship team also came with Olin Kreutz, Chris Faumatu-Ma’afala, and Dominic Raiola! As of this moment, the school has won 20 state championships.

Alabama — Hoover High School
Formerly known as Berry High, Hoover High won 2 state titles under the guidance of Bob Finley before it was renamed in 1994. The coach died before Hoover opened for the following year. The school got national attention during the early ‘00s thanks to the MTV show Two-A-Day. Under Rich Propst, the school took home 5 state titles and then 6 more under Josh Niblett.

DeMatha Catholic High does not compete for the Maryland state championships but for the Washington Catholic Athletic Conference titles instead. The Offensive and Defensive Player of the Year lists are full of DeMatha talents, however. It holds the record in the league with its 24 titles. DeMatha product Chase Young is a potential top pick in the 2020 NFL draft.

Former coach Allan Trimble is thought to be the greatest high school football coach in Oklahoma. Jenks High has its home games at the Allan Trimble Stadium, while the school rests on Allan Trimble Way. He spent 6 seasons working as the assistant coach before he took over the position in 1996. He won 6 state titles during his first 6 seasons in the position! The school holds 16 state championships at the moment.

With its 24 state championships, Valdosta High claims that it is the winningest high school football program the U.S. has ever seen. It won the ESPN “Titletown USA” contest back in 2008 as the city in the U.S. with the best relationship with its homegrown title-winning team.

Saint Ignatius High School grad Chuck Kyle had been the head coach of the team for all of its 11 state titles. This is still 13 behind Massillon High, however. However, the Ohio leader has not won a state title ever since 1972, which was the first year that Ohio started the playoff system. Meanwhile, Saint Ignatius has brought home all the titles ever since.

Bishop Gorman High was a state power and eventually became a national power. The Gaels won 3 straight national championships from 2014 to 2016 under the guidance of Tony and Kenny Sanchez. In 2014, Tony left post-season to serve as the head coach at UNLV. During the 2019 season, there were 32 Bishop Gorman products on the FBS rosters! The school has brought home 19 state titles overall.

St. Thomas Aquinas High has tradition and talent that gave them some edge in such a competitive state. The school legacy is all thanks to George Smith, who hailed the 2008 Coach of the Year by USA Today. He won 6 state titles and then retired in 2010 after winning a 2nd national title. Michael Irvin and Nick Bosa are products of the school, which has 10 state championships.

Southlake Carroll High has its home games at the Dragon Stadium. The school has won 3 consecutive national titles when it was led by Todd Dodge from 2003 to 2005. When it comes to topnotch high school football, you will have a hard time finding something better than what they have over here. The 2004 team went 16-0 and featured half a dozen future NFL stars. The school has 8 state titles.

California — De La Salle High School
De La Salle is the holder of the longest high school football winning streak record in the country. It has won 151 games from 1992 until 2005! For this school, state championships are less important than the national championships. From 1998 to 2003, they won six consecutive national titles! The exploits of the team have been chronicled in two books. They got adapted for the screen with the 2014 movie called When the Game Stands Tall.

Ohio State University is the home of the Buckeyes and is part of the East division of the NCAA Big Ten Conference Football. Their leading coach has brought the Buckeyes to five division championships in five seasons and 24 consecutive winning games, in addition to a perfect season in 2012. The team also has six division titles, eight national titles, and 38 conference titles. Fans go crazy over game days at Ohio State with screaming audiences filling the stadium to maximum capacity. As of 2017, the team was worth $1.5 billion.

The University of Georgia’s beloved Bulldogs rack in their fans decked out in red and black. In 1920 the team got its name “Bulldogs” when a journalist referred to the team with this name and it stuck. The university holds the 10th largest NCAA stadium and can fit 95,000 fans comfortably. Their biggest enemy is the Auburn Tigers, whom they regularly compete with. They are a division 1 member of the NCAA and SEC and have claimed 2 national championships and 15 conference titles.

In 1982 the University of Alamba got its first start into football when Crimson Tide won its first game rivaled with a team of players from Livingston and Birmingham. In 1925 they had an undefeated season and earned an entry to the Rose Bowl. As of now, the team is third in the country for overall fan attendance with 1,228,376 in 2017. The Crimson Tide has had 65 bowl appearances, 30 conference titles, 17 national titles, two Heisman victories, and 69 All-American award receivers.

In 1982, Auburn had its first game whereas today their Jordan-Hare stadium has one of the largest and noisiest crowds. Game days bring in nearly 87,500 fans and its stadium is labeled Alabama’s fifth-largest city. The Tigers are a beloved team who have competed in the west division of the NCAA and Sec and have achieved 12 football hall of fame inductees, 29 All-Americans, and three Heisman wins. They also have 12 undefeated seasons and five national championships.

Penn State’s Nittany Lions are members of the Big Ten Conference and one of the oldest U.S. college football teams. They were founded in 1887 and now have nearly 750,000 fans at home game. They are amongst the top 10 teams with the most energetic fans. With two national and three conference championships, they are number 8 for all-time total wins. They also have four Big Ten Conference championships, 48 bowl games, and their very own Heisman winner John Cappelletti. Their head coach Joe Paterno has successfully led the Lions for 46 seasons, which is the record for any coach in the FBS.

in 1898, the U-M Wolverines won their first Big Ten football title and a national title in 1901. The Michigan Stadium most locally referred to as the “big house” was the most expensive and largest at the time of construction in 1927. The team is proud of having the most all-time wins of any team with stats of 951-344-36. They are also credited with 42 conference titles, 11 national titles, and three Heisman winners.

With 4 conference titles, three national titles, eight division titles, and 31 All-American award winners, the Fighting Tigers or the LSU Tigers compete in the SEC Western Division and had their very first game back in 1893 when they lost to Tulane. Texas A & M’s adored Aggies are a member of the NCAA division, FBS, and the SEC Western Division. They are longstanding rivals with the Texas Longhorns since their first game in 1984. Their home, Kyle Stadium, accommodates almost 103,000 fans making it one of the five largest college football stadiums. The Aggies have a record of 732-477-48 conference titles, 28 All-American recipients. three division titles, and two Heisman winners.

Don’t even get me started on their home stadium, the Gaylord Family Oklahoma Memorial Stadium is one of the largest in the state and one of the 15 largest in the nation. They have achieved 47 conference titles, 80 All-American wins, and six Heisman victories.

Regardless, the have claimed 18 conference championships, six all-time national championships, and 28 bowl wins. They also have seen dozens of Hall of Fames draftees, 20 All-Americans, and retired jerseys from talented players like Peyton Manning.

The Clemson Tigers are big on their athletic traditions and always have stadiums packed with fans. Since they got their first started in 1896, the team has seen 700 victories and seven consecutive seasons of 10 or more victories which are the second-longest success streak in the NCAA.
