Kansas — Smith Center High School
The football program of the Smith Center High School has been chronicled in Joe Drape’s best-selling book called “Our Boys: A Perfect Season on the Plains.” The street where the institution stands is Roger Barta Way, named after the famous head coach who was dubbed the national coach of the year back in 2007. Smith Center once had a 79-game streak from 2004 to 2009, the longest in American history! It has 10 state titles at the moment.
West Virginia — Wheeling Central Catholic High School
Wheeling Central Catholic High is a title away from going to a tie with Parkersburg High for the state record of 17 titles. Parkersburg did win its first 8 state titles by “popular acclaim” or voting among the sportswriters of the state. In 2018, top defensive player Andy Murray went on to be the first two-time winner of the Huff Award. Current coach Mike Young has 7 state titles since he took over in 2005.
