A few years later special additions were added to the sculpture such as neon lights, to ensure that nobody gets lost in the middle of the dessert. Michael Mikel, the founder of the “The Black Rock Rangers” strived to keep everyone safe and out of physical violence.

1991 was the first year the festival was held and only 250 guests were in the audience. By 1995 this number changed dramatically with about 4,000 attendees. Two years later nearly 10,000 attended and kept growing with 50,000 by 2010.
