Despite being charged with theft, Burrell’s prosecution was sensationally ignored after the Queen interfered in his defense. She had granted permission to her former employee to store the 310 products in question. The court charges against Burrell are dismissed as a consequence of this decision.

Not The Last Time
This will not, though, be the last time Burrell’s acts were brought into doubt. During the inquiry into Diana’s death in 2008, an ex-royal household member was found to have illegally duplicated the princess’s and others’ communications. On the other side, Burrell said that he did so because of the papers’ “historical significance.”
