The Plan
Henri Paul, the deputy head of hotel management, was assigned to drive the couple even though it was his night off. Paul, Dodi, Diana, and bodyguard Trevor Rees-Jones would leave from the hotel’s back, while two decoy vehicles would leave from the front. It was the early morning of August 31, 1997, at this point.

Paul dashed into the darkness as a result, but the photographers were alerted to the situation and pursued the Mercedes. According to an inquest, the paparazzi tried unsuccessfully to “block” Paul to slow him down. Instead, the limo kept going, reaching speeds of around 65 mph before crashing.
