David Dinkins, New York City’s first and only Black mayor, died on November 23 at the age of 93. Dinkins has spent much of his public life aiming to fix racial tensions in the nation’s capital.

Pat Quinn

According to the ALS Foundation, Pat Quinn, one of the co-founders of the ALS Ice Bucket Challenge, died on November 22 at the age of 37. In 2014, the Ice Bucket Challenge went viral, with over 17 million people pouring ice water over their heads to raise awareness for Lou Gehrig’s disease (ALS). The ALS Association received $115 million in donations from 2.5 million people across the country in what the organization called “probably the single largest episode of giving outside of a disaster or emergency” at the time.
