Spices, just like ground coffee, do not generally have a long shelf life. Even though they would not go bad or expire, they tend to lose more flavor with the passage of time. If you are a normal person cooking for two to four people, smaller jars are more advisable. Bulk spices are meant for Italian restaurants!

Buy- Vanilla
Even though most spices lose flavor after a while, vanilla is an exception. The large vanilla extract bottle at Costco is a great investment. This is especially good if you like spontaneous cookie baking sessions.
