Ohio
“Why, oh why, did I ever leave Ohio? Why did I wander to find what lies yonder When life was so cozy at home?” goes an old song. We are sad to say that the answer is work for over half the people who fled it. According to BLS, the wages remain below the national median. The unemployment rate, on the other hand, is high at 4.2 percent. DJWLJR is a Redditor who said that the weather is also tough: “It’s too hot, or too cold, and not enough of spring or fall. The weather here is erratic and sometimes very extreme.”
Kansas
Dorothy once said, “There’s no place like home.” People in Kansas no longer share that sentiment of hers. Over half of the people who left did so for work, although family and retirement were also big factors for a quarter of those who did. While it is affordable to live there and not find a job, the BLS said people make around $6,000 below the national median per year. On Quora, Lindsey Bugbee said that Western Kansas is very insular. She explained, “Life is very slow-paced. People ignore the world outside because Kansas is a perfect bubble of safety. In effect, some towns feel no need to distinguish themselves from other places.”
