The Prairie State retained the second spot on the list. Chicago has much expansive farmland and boasts high taxes and the biggest bottle of catsup in the world. NPR Illinois and the University of Illinois Springfield revealed that 77 percent of respondents find the economy poor or fair. The same survey revealed that three out of five people said they were thinking of moving somewhere else, primarily because of taxes. Michael Kong took to Quora to say that the taxes are high due to the education system. “I can say it has something to do with supporting the local school system,” he said. “Every year, I receive a letter explaining where my property tax goes into. From the letter, I can see about $8,000 goes to the public school system, and another $2,000 goes to the community college.”

The last entry on our list is the Garden State, which was also the previous year’s case. United Van Lines has revealed that people have wanted to move out of New Jersey for over a decade. Jobs and retirement cause people to pack their bags and leave. Taxes might be a major culprit as well. On Reddit, bjorn2bwild said that everything is super expensive there. “We have high property taxes if you want to live in a decent area. School districts are very closely tied to municipalities, so if you want your kids to go to a good school, prepare to pay for it. Auto insurance, tolls, most goods, and services are all very high,” they said. That’s all for the states people want to leave, but where are people going?
