Gail was perplexed by the letters and was under the impression that they held some significance for her. All she needed to know was what they were talking about. Gail wrote to the State of Louisiana once more, this time with only one question in mind: what do the letters “col” stand for in Louisiana? It didn’t take long before she received an official response from the state. When she opened the letter and read the first paragraph, she was completely taken aback and couldn’t speak. That could account for her mother’s silence on the subject of the incident.
The Letter’s Content
However, although it was only a few sentences long, the letter from the state provided vital information that Gail had been looking for her entire life. The state provided an explanation in the letter, stating that “col” is actually an abbreviation for “colored.” Gail couldn’t believe what she was seeing. She wasn’t even sure whether her mother was aware of it, and at first, she believed she’d made a terrible mistake by agreeing to the arrangement. Gail, on the other hand, began to have reservations about the entire arrangement after learning that her mother had always kept her family’s origins a closely guarded secret.
