Anxious Small Talk
While Rose sipped her tea, Gianni and Mr. Tataki engaged in light conversation. Mr. Tataki’s first name was Shinji, and his family had been receiving PhDs in Boston for nearly 10 years. Ten years ago, Shinji and Mrs. Tataki met during college orientation, fell in love, and moved permanently to Boston. They turned to IVF only after years of marriage and childlessness. After becoming pregnant, they chose to return to Japan so that their child may grow up surrounded by family. Rose noticed a rumbling emanating from the stairs.

That must be Akari, responded Shinji. Mrs. Tataki, or Akari, appeared exhausted when she entered the room. She was a giant. To be fair, anyone eight months pregnant would expect to be that enormous. “It’s so nice to meet you” stated Rose. “Despite the circumstances” she continued with a gloomy expression. “Ah yes” Akari remarked. “We must sort this mess out shouldn’t we” “Let me just get a cup of tea, then we will sit and discuss it all” Rose and Gianni awaited anxiously.
