A Risky Occupation
In 1996, Nadya married Marcos Gutierrez, the same year she received her psychiatric technician license from Mt. San Antonio College. She also started working at the psychiatric facility Metropolitan State Hospital in Norwalk, California. It was a rewarding job, but it wasn’t easy, and it was even risky for her. Nadya’s main ambition was to start a family, but she also desired a fulfilling career. However, something unfortunate occurred at her workplace, and the rest of her life became a roller-coaster ride.
Tragedy Strikes
On September 18th, 1999, Nadya Suleman was working in a psychiatric facility when she was caught in the middle of a horrific incident. Because of twenty patients, a riot broke out at the facility, and Nadya tried to intervene right away. One of the female patients threw a wooden desk into the air during the commotion, landing on Nadya’s back and causing her herniated disc injury. The $170,000 in workers’ compensation benefits helped Nadya get by for a while, but it was the least of her problems.
