National Geographic then took on this million-dollar project and put Aiello in charge. The funds let him do further research in order to prove that the photo was the real thing. The budget also let him hire Kevin Costner as the narrator of this 2-hour special! Of course, Aiello made sure to put the spotlight on the process Randy went through in order to verify the authenticity of the historic material.

In the National Geographic documentary called “Billy The Kid: New Evidence”, they used facial recognition on the photograph to compare it with existing images of Billy the Kid and the rest of The Regulators. The results showed a 70% match! The maker of the croquet set in use had also been traced. The experts were able to determine the heights of those in the photograph in this manner.
