The reason for Susan’s abandonment is unclear. The doctor had examined her child and, upon seeing the results, had called the police and fled the room, leaving Susan behind. Realizing the gravity of the situation, Susan began to panic.

When Susan saw that the doctor had closed and locked the door, she flushed violently. She threw her body weight against the door in an effort to open it. It only took a few blows for it to collapse. She was now confronting the medical staff that had put her in quarantine.

Susan didn’t think anything was wrong when she woke up to her crying infant. A normal morning, it seemed. She got up and shuffled to the bathroom to change baby Roy’s diaper. She was about to scream when she realized there was a problem with his milk just before she poured it into his cup.

As she got closer, she saw that the holes were actually digging into his skin, dispelling her initial suspicion that something had become stuck to his nose. Roy’s tears flowed when she touched him. Maybe an insect bit him or got up her baby’s nose. Maybe it had landed on his nose and refused to let go during the night. She had never seen a bug behave this way before. Susan did some research online and found that it wasn’t a bug. Nothing could possibly go wrong anymore.

As Susan examined Roy’s nose, her confusion grew. In other words, these weren’t pinprick-sized flaws. There was obviously something lurking within the craters. She had no idea what was there, but she felt sure it was more than just the blank space. Those holes were tough, and so was whatever was inside. She had to take action, and she knew just what to do.

Susan decided to use tweezers to remove the object from her child’s nostril. She went to the restroom and retrieved her tweezers, but she dithered before inserting them into his nose. She was completely oblivious to the gravity of her situation. She risked making matters even worse by taking this action.

Susan had a strong aversion to medical professionals. She was more comfortable working independently. Though she hated the idea of going to the doctor, she knew she needed to go because she couldn’t handle her health problems on her own and only went when she had to. Additionally, the safety of her unborn child was in jeopardy. In spite of the potential consequences, she decided to call the doctor anyway.

A half-urgent appointment with the doctor was set up for later that day. They assured her that even though some people would arrive before baby Roy, she would probably see her today. During this time, Susan was advised by the doctor to intervene on his behalf.

The doctor told Susan to think back on any recent life changes that might account for this. Any out-of-the-ordinary occurrence. It would be a big help to the doctor in figuring out what was wrong. Susan said she would think about it and then she put down the phone. And what could have caused this? She couldn’t say for certain.

Susan thought back on the past seven days. They had done nothing out of the ordinary, both her and her child. A few days ago, she and Roy went on a forest hike. Previously, the infant could have reached out and touched something outside. A piece of contaminated moss or a mushroom, perhaps? That could work too… maybe.

It seemed to Susan that the hike was going nowhere. That trail had undoubtedly been used by other hikers before. In other words, it was a road frequently taken by others. It’s likely that she wouldn’t be the first person to feel this way. There must be additional indicators. She ultimately decided to rule that possibility out, but she knew there had to be others.

There wasn’t much that stood out to us as being out of the ordinary. Susan was your average person. She mostly just went on hikes and hung out at the coffee shop. Because of her job, she spent most of her time indoors. Before that realization, she was a really dull person. Additionally, something else was peculiar.

Susan went on a date the night before we met. She had been corresponding with a man online for some time before agreeing to meet him in person. Susan wanted to get back out there and date. She was single and looking for a satisfying date. Somehow, the situation would take a drastic turn.

Already at the first few minutes of their date, Susan had a bad feeling about this guy. It was clear that he had no interest in either her or the baby. He almost looked down on her because she raised her kids alone. As soon as she even suspected such a thing, he would prove his interest by taking some action. Susan had forgotten the original purpose of his contact with her. After reading their past exchanges, she came to the conclusion that he wasn’t particularly fond of her. She had been in a state of desperation and had not been thinking clearly. Would there be any way for him to be involved?

Thankfully, it didn’t look like the holes in his nose were getting any bigger or smaller. They were more noticeable now that they were a little bigger, but it wasn’t a big deal. Right?

Susan signed in at the reception desk at the doctor’s office, took a deep breath, and relaxed before looking at her baby. Next, the doctor called in the next patient. All the adults in the room agreed that it was most important to see Susan’s newborn first. Not one of them had any major problems, but Roy did. Susan found this irritating but chose to express gratitude regardless. She was concerned, but she also knew she could wait. However, the doctor had different thoughts.

No way could you have forgotten about something of this importance. To add insult to injury, the doctor had never seen anything like this in his medical textbooks. He was totally clueless.

The doctor thought it would be a while before they saw any results. The doctor on call made a few phone calls to transfer his patients. His priority was taking care of Baby Roy, so he would work tirelessly to find a solution to whatever was ailing him.

While waiting for Susan’s test results, the doctor took a close look at Roy’s nose. Stranger still, baby Roy stopped crying after initially crying. It felt like his entire nose had gone numb. It didn’t hurt when the doctor pushed on it. That should have been a red flag.

The doctor looked up Roy’s nostrils repeatedly, and he was frustrated when the initial results came back negative. Nothing had come up in any of the tests he’d ordered. Both she and her baby were hemmed in by the building. Worse yet, she overheard the doctor boasting to his colleagues that he had called the police.

After a few hard kicks, the lock on the door gave way, and the door swung open. Those on the other side started screaming, prompting Susan’s doctor to retreat. Susan was breathing very quickly. Forcing open the door had been difficult, but she had to know what was going on.

Susan was the only one instructed to remain by her doctor, who dismissed the others. She needs to keep her distance from other people at the moment. Susan knew the fate of her and her baby was grim when she saw the fear on her doctor’s face, but she was unfazed. She threatened to leave unless they could answer some questions she had.

In the middle of Susan’s doctor’s explanation, three armed officers entered the building. The doctor pointed at Susan and yelled, “It’s THEM!” The three policemen pulled out their guns and took careful aim at Susan, who was beginning to feel dizzy. What the heck happened?!

As the police officers approached, Susan quickly put up her hands. She was on the verge of tears as she pleaded with them to explain the situation. The baby was told to wait by the police because the holes in her nose thumb were so large that they covered almost the entire nose.

Susan was assured coolly by an officer that she would be given all the information she needed, but that she and her baby were in immediate need of isolation. Susan accepted the terms, but she made it clear that if she needed to break down another door to get information, she would do so without hesitation. Nobody was comforting her, and she was terrified.

The door to the doctor’s office closed after Susan had returned. As soon as Susan saw the cleaning crew come in with their heavy equipment, she got to work scrubbing the floors, walls, and door. At long last, the doctor knocked on Susan’s door to break the bad news.

The doctor first expressed regret for Susan not being kept up to date. Fear had gripped him. A patient infected with a horrible flesh-eating virus was not something he saw every day, so he had to perform procedures he had never done before. Not only did he feel terrible, but worse was to come.

He probed Susan with questions about her previous day. Before her date that night, Susan had gone on a hike. To Susan’s relief, the unfortunate date was not the cause of everything that had happened. Instead, it’s more likely that the infant came into contact with an infected plant during their outing. Yet, which one is it?

Susan could not find the right words to express her feelings. She shared what she knew with the police and his doctor, including the path he took and any pertinent information she had observed. She was at a loss for what to do next. Her main focus was on the proposed course of treatment. Can they possibly help the infant? Is his nose going to be eaten by the virus, or what?

Susan was fortunate in that the hospital had the required medication, but the baby had to be isolated for a while. Susan’s hike was the reason the police were called, but when they saw her emerge from the isolation room, they freaked out for the same reason her doctor had. It was already a huge mess, but there was more.

At the same time, they had to prevent the spread of the disease. Roy and Susan were taken to a better hospital, where he could receive isolation and treatment for the virus that was destroying his nose. As a result of taking the medication, the virus was halted in its tracks, and the condition began to improve rapidly. However, what about the plant?

After a lengthy search, the officers had succeeded in keeping the public away from the trail and in locating a plant that was not indigenous to the area. Susan’s problem was traced back to this item, which was tested and found to be the culprit. It had to be ripped out of the ground and destroyed. No new cases have been reported since, and Susan was back out on dates after only a month of rest and recuperation.
