In the 1970s and 1980s, Phyllis worked as a dancer, a cheerleader for the St. Louis Cardinals football team, and a burlesque performer. However, she suffered a knee injury that forced her to quit. After that happened, she worked in Hollywood as an actress and in casting. As a matter of fact, she’d been working as a casting associate on The Office when she was offered the role of Phyllis Vance, a character that was made specifically for her.
