In 1995, the first mammal was successfully cloned! Scientists cloned a domestic sheep while they used nuclear transfer – whatever that means. But why should we care? Because they named the sheep after Dolly! Ian Wilmut, the man who cloned the sheep, explained, “Dolly is derived from a mammary gland cell and we couldn’t think of a more impressive pair of glands than Dolly Parton’s.”

When Dolly learned how the sheep got its name, she was flattered. Saying the following, “she was called after me because she had big mammary glands. She gave me a lot of competition… but I always said there’s no such thing as baaad publicity.”
