Apparently, artists only get reimbursement for their expenses, which includes production costs, lodging, travel, and talent fees). Why? Well, the Super Bowl executives are aware that no performer could gather an audience as much as the Super Bowl could. The exposure is the payment they get. According to Forbes, it cost them $600,000 to pay for Beyoncé’s production expenses alone! Whoa.

We already talked about the 1991 Super Bowl, which was the first one to feature big contemporary performers. In the past, they mostly featured local musicians and college bands. It was in 1991 that New Kids on the Block appeared as the headlining band. However, people tuning in from home were disappointed. The network cut away from the program to cover the Gulf War.
