The Big Blow
In the case of Billie and Peggy, there was no way out of their predicament. For Billie, the government was calling in her oath of service, which he had taken as a citizen of the United States. They were both aware that the pledge they took to their country took precedence over whatever oath they might have taken to each other. Realization hit them hard when they discovered they would not be able to start the family they had both hoped for immediately away was a harsh reality. The couple knew they had a responsibility to uphold, and even though they didn’t get to spend as much time together as they would have liked, they weren’t going to back down.
Having to Face Reality
Peggy tried to maintain a positive attitude while watching helplessly as her husband gathered his belongings. The fact that she had no choice but to stand there and watch him go out the door made her feel helpless.
Billie, on the other hand, was well aware of what he was getting himself into and took his responsibilities seriously. Despite the fact that neither of them knew whether he would make it home, they held out hope as they said their goodbyes.
