Who would have thought that pom pom hats originated with the Vikings. Back then, in the cold winter climate of Norway, the hats with the pom poms kept the head warm. The pom poms were sewn onto the hat to protect the seams. Years later, people began to sew buttons onto the hat instead of pom poms. However, this did not look particularly fashionable, but more like a small bean. Incidentally, this is where the name comes from.
