It concerned Edward VIII, who took over in 1936 after King George V, his father, passed away. Apparently, however, he was very smitten with Wallis Simpson, an American divorcee. However, the British government and the Church of England disapproved of the union between his bride and the king.

A divorcee was not considered to be a fitting wife. This was the reason Edward chose to abdicate the throne! He was the sovereign ruler for less than a year when he made this decision! “I have found it impossible to carry on the heavy burden of responsibility and to discharge the duties of a king, as I would wish to do, without the help and support of the woman I love,” Edward declared back then.
