The Queen broke tons of rules and protocols after Diana’s death to accommodate her grandsons and do what she felt was in their best interest. One amazing thing she did was authorize a proper ceremonial funeral for Diana which she was not actually entitled to due to her divorce from Prince Charles. The Queen bowed her head at Diana’s coffin as it was being rolled from Buckingham Palace to Westminster Abbey, monarchs do not bow their heads for anyone.

Royal protocol states that no one should touch royals, of course, handshakes are accepted. However, when Michelle Obama met the Queen she felt compelled and drawn to lay a hand on her back- a warm gesture. The Queen responded politely and went with it. a true lady, or ladies- both of them. Michelle Obama discusses it in her book and said that the queen responded by placing a gloved hand on her back too. This is something very unusual but the Queen is not shy to break a rule or two.
