Texarkana, Texas

Small town Texarkana is located on the border of Texas and Arkansas. Aside from being known for having a horrible smell due to a paper mill, the tiny town became infamous after five people were murdered within only three months. The murders later inspired the movie titled The Town That Dreaded Sundown. Texarkana is not really a bastion of a charming small town.

Aside from experiencing a population decline, Portsmouth also has the highest incidence of unemployment in Virginia. Based on the stats that the U.S. Department of Labor released (taken in 2016), the unemployment rate in the state is at 3.8%, but Portsmouth sits at a whopping 6.7%, which makes it among the hardest cities in Virginia to land a job in. It is a mystery why anyone would think about living in such a place.
