The Great Escape (1963)
Who’d have guessed that one of the most well-known Hollywood war films would also be one of the most historically accurate? Despite the fact that it was not recognized for its historical accuracy, The Great Escape remained loyal to its characters and times. In fact, many of the characters were based on real people! The team also used a tunnel built for escape and shot the scenes in German locations. Nonetheless, the film portrays this escape in a more Americanized light, although in truth, it was primarily planned by Canadian and British personnel. Three of the fugitives were Dutch and Norwegian.

Rescue Dawn (2006)
Did you realize that this documentary-turned-film from 2006 was based on a true story? If you haven’t watched it yet, Dieter Dengler is a German-American pilot kidnapped during the Vietnam War. He was apprehended, imprisoned, and tortured before escaping. Rescue Dawn has received a lot of appreciation for going to such pains to portray the camp’s daily challenges. However, minor aspects like his accent and the number of hostages kept hostage were changed. More crucially, in order to keep the film PG-13, it downplays the horrific torture Dengler endured.
