U-571 (2000)

The cast of U-571 included Matthew McConaughey, Jon Bon Jovi, and Harvey Keitel, among others. It was intended to honor the valiant American soldiers who rescued Enigma encryption equipment from a German submarine during WWII. Despite the fact that they were successful, the truth is that the HMS Bulldog of the United Kingdom achieved this accomplishment months before the United States joined the war effort. The film was heavily chastised for this, as it appeared to minimize the contributions of other Allied nations during the war.

Jarhead (2005)

Jarhead starred Jake Gyllenhaal in the major role. The film got a lot of praise for its portrayal of the psychological toll that US troops faced during the first Gulf War. Despite this, the film has been panned by ex-marines. The mental and physical violence was “unusual and taken out of context,” according to one of them. The film became so divisive that the Marine Corps Office of Public Affairs was forced to release a statement. It claimed that, in addition to being a “realistic picture of military life,” it contained an “inaccurate” portrayal of the soldiers.
