He Was In Complete Disbelief
David van Auker did not think much of the abstract work of art that he bought at the estate sale. This only lasted until a customer saw it and told him, “That’s a Willem de Kooning!” Who would have thought that someone would ever find such a valuable piece at an estate sale? It only occurred to van Auker just how lucky he got after doing some research. His jaw dropped when he stumbled upon an article that talked about the theft of the painting from the Arizona Museum of Art. Could it be true?

His astonishment turned into fear once he realized what he had in his hands. He knew that he had to keep it away from the eyes of greedy people. How ironic is it that the bathroom was the only room with a lock in the store? There was no other way around it, so he locked the 40” x 30” painting in there. The shop owner explained, “We were afraid someone would bash it or flick paint off it so that’s when we decided we would pick it up and stick it somewhere safe.” The next thing to do was call the museum.
