When her song “I Will Always Love You” was released in 1974 and skyrocketed to the top of the charts, the King of Rock and Roll reached out. Elvis Presley wanted to cover the song and Parton was obviously incredibly honored. However Colonel Tom Parker, Presley’s sly manager, stepped in and explained it was procedure for a songwriter to sign over half of their publishing rights to a Presley records. As a result, Dolly Parton outright refused and has gone on to earn millions in royalties.
His Last Day
After spending eight years performing together, Dolly Parton and Porter Wagoner created a special relationship. So much so that Dolly was there on the day he passed away, she was the last one to see him alive. She recalls the day vividly, “I held his hand, and we prayed… Porter’s soul was already with God. All that was left was a shell.”
