When the rumors were circulating, Flea took to Facebook to confirm what people suspected. He reported that they knew that they would only have live vocals. Flea wrote this for his fans: “I understand the NFL’s stance on this, given they only have a few minutes to set up the stage, there a zillion things that could go wrong and ruin the sound for the folks watching in the stadium and the t.v. viewers.”

It looks like every performance out there is open to criticism nowadays. With a large audience, it is bound to happen. Beyoncé delivered a politically charged halftime performance in 2016. It referenced Malcolm X, Hurricane Katrina, Black Lives Matter, and the Black Panthers. Many people did not approve of this. However, Jessica Williams from the Today Show expressed her support right away with a biting editorial segment. Here is a snippet: “I didn’t realize that singing about race was equivalent to Janet Jackson getting her [expletive] pulled out at the Super Bowl. But you’re right … the fans deserve wholesome entertainment. Like watching 300-pound men give each other concussions while a crowd cheers like we’re extras in the movie Gladiator.”
