Kitchen towel
You might think there’s only one way to use a kitchen towel (how could we go wrong?), but this latest prank has proven otherwise! We’re all guilty of using too much towel to save the carpet from another juice disaster. But using too much towel not only drives up the cost of your shopping cart, it’s not environmentally friendly either. Scientist Joe Smith has found that it’s most efficient to tear off a paper towel and fold it in half rather than placing it directly on the stain, as this significantly increases the amount of moisture the sheet can absorb. This is due to the so-called “interstitial suspension”, i.e. the space created between the two layers allows the moisture droplets to adhere to the towel and to each other between the folds. Clever!
Backpack diamond
We always tend to overlook little details on our everyday items that we don’t immediately understand, and that goes for this common feature on a certain type of backpack as well. Jansport backpacks are becoming increasingly popular, and many people assume that the small diamond-shaped patch is simply a small embellishment. However, they have a name – “lash tab” or “pig snout” – and are used to attach extra gear to your backpack with a string. Whether it’s extra shoes, a flashlight, a thermos flask or a sleeping bag – everything can be strapped on with the little “pig snout”. This saves you valuable time because you don’t have to rummage around in your rucksack and you also have more space in your rucksack!
