Even Humans Have It
However, you should keep in mind that dogs are not the only animals with bodies that produce biliverdin. As a matter of fact, we humans also carry the pigment in our bodies! This is the pigment that gives our bruises that distinctive yellow and green tinge.
Even though it is completely natural, too much of the pigment can be dangerous for the body. An excessive amount of the bile can cause jaundice in the body tissue, blood, and circulatory system. Children and newborns tend to be more prone to contracting this, although it happens to adults too.
Other Animals Too
Humans and dogs are not the only ones to have this. In fact, there are many other species in the animal kingdom that carry the bile pigment. Marine fish also tend to have biliverdin in their blood!
Aside from the aforementioned creatures, butterflies and moths tend to have the pigment as well. Frog eggs also carry traces of this pigment. Despite this, it is rare to see all the animals of a species come with the pigment.
