The personnel of the animal shelter had no understanding why this was occurring because they had never witnessed anything even similar. The justifications for repeatedly returning the poor animal sounded too feeble and shallow. In addition, they were so unique that at least some of them had to be fabricated. Some stated Benji was excessively active, while others claimed he would not even leave his bed. Some individuals chastised Benji for his excessive enthusiasm. Others reported he avoided the park because he was terrified of the other dogs, while others claimed he was aggressive toward other canines.

When the animal shelter ran out of options for Benji, they decided to re-adopt him. He could not, however, spend the remainder of his life in the refuge. After being returned for the eleventh time, no one believed that this unhappy dog would ever find a home where he could live out the remainder of his days. It was also evident that the puppy, with whom everyone at the shelter had developed a deep relationship, was beginning to experience the repercussions of being trapped in this endless cycle of suffering. They could plainly see that each time he returned to the case, the radiance in his eyes diminished somewhat. It was catastrophic.
