In late 2018, the couple announced that they were expecting a child together! It happened not that long after the wedding. Meghan was still at the beginning of the pregnancy, so it did not show when they started their commonwealth tour later that month. Press photos showed Meghan cradling a tiny baby bump several times. The press did not respond positively to these gestures as they accused her of “flaunting” or “virtue signaling.” They said it was self-righteous or a way to demonstrate moral correctness. Sadly, this made the public think that she is untrustworthy and inauthentic. Yikes.

Meghan decided to host her baby shower not in Britain but in New York. Her good friend Serena Williams funded the occasion, and all the guests had to endure a lot of camera flashes courtesy of the paparazzi. This special occasion for the new royal got condemned across the pond, however. You see, baby showers are not common in the United Kingdom. Many British people thought that she was being over-the-top and even dubbed the event “Showergate.” Quite a number of people on the fence about Meghan felt like it confirmed that she was far too American to be a member of the royal family.
