Safety First
John knew that it would be foolish to proceed without serious preparation, even if he did it carefully. This is because he is a fire department captain. He is very much aware of the danger that he could be in if he just climbed down into the space. It is possible that the structure beneath was not stable, so he came up with a plan. The problem was, he could not do it on his own.

Since John was in need of some help with his plan, he called up a few of his friends. It was part of the plan to have backup in case something went wrong. With his experience rescuing people, John knew if the old lid collapsed and fell on him, he would not make it out alive. However, before they could explore what was in the underground space, an important task had to be completed.
