He Found An Odd Rock On His Ranch, But It Was Even Stranger Than He Thought

Published on 06/21/2021

In case you did not know, it is not easy to be a rancher. This is a job that involves working the fields no matter what the weather is like. We don’t imagine that it is a breeze to take care of livestock either. This rancher was concerned when he discovered a strange rock on his farm in Argentina. He had no idea that it was far weirder than he initially thought, which says a lot. What on earth did it turn out to be anyway?

A Man Called Juan De Dios Sota

For Juan de Dios Sota, there was nothing special about that particular day. He owned a ranch close to Buenos Aires, Argentina. His cows were out grazing at the time. He was glad that they seemed to be all right even though there had been an ongoing drought in the region. The current weather conditions had not been favorable, however. With the lack of supply of water, they must have been very thirsty.

There Was A Drought

Have you ever gotten up close and personal with a cow? If this is the case, you would know that they are willing to do just about anything to find water. They will look far and wide to quench the thirst that they feel. When things get bad, they might even stampede. Luckily for the rancher, they had other plans on that day. They headed off to a special place on their own. Of course, he did not know this at the time.

On The Lookout For Water

Some of the cows walked off to look for water. They found themselves at the Vallimanca riverbeds, which they must have known were usually wet. The drought, sadly, dried up the bodies of water and caused the water levels to go down. The riverbeds were located at the edge of the ranch, so he had to chase after them. Along the way, he stopped in his tracks as something caught his eye. It demanded his attention as his curiosity got the best of him. Was this going to cause any problems for the rancher?

Each And Every Part Of The Ranch

Juan, as expected, was familiar with nearly every single spot on the ranch. After all, the rancher had been raising cows there for a very long time by then. You would have thought that he had already seen everything worth seeing there. The drought revealed things that even he did not know about the area, however. He was not worried about the animals as they walked around the farm. Even so, this weird object made him curious as it looked different from the other debris in the riverbanks. What was it?

He Tripped On A Big Stone

He had been leading the cows away from the riverbed when he tripped on a huge stone. Just so you know, the river had never been that low before. You could even see the stones at the bottom of the bed! Once he got up, he dusted off his pants and took a closer look at the object. Right away, he thought that it was the strangest stone that he had laid his eyes on. He was intrigued and wanted to learn more.

After Taking A Closer Look

Once he took a closer look at it, he assumed that it was just the tip of a larger object. This thing came with a distinctive pattern that caught his interest. He came to the realization that it was not a rock at all. He knew that he had to ask for help. After all, he could tell that it was important and possibly valuable.

Curious About This Weird Stone

He took it upon himself to clear out the surface. This was when the shape started to make itself even clearer. It was a round object that was really quite massive. It had been buried deep into the soil, so it was not easy to take it out. The unique pattern on it seemed out of place on a rock. Aside from that, the size of the object made him wonder what it truly was. He knew that the authorities could help with this.

It Looked A Lot Like This

Check out this photo. The rock on the ranch looked very similar to the one below. The photo came from another discovery back in 2015. While it looks a lot like this one, it was even bigger in size. The pattern, which reminds us of a honeycomb, was also present on its surface. It did not look like a rock because it was not one. Not once did Juan think that he would find such a thing there on that fine day.

He Asked The Authorities For Help

The cops went to the farm to take a look at what he was talking about. They were just as shocked as he was! It was clearly a fossil, but they did not know how to handle this case. They might have been trained to deal with land mines and old munition, but this was out of their comfort zone. It was a good thing that they knew who to contact about this. They knew that they were not the best fit for the job at hand.

A Team Of Experts Came To Help

They reached out to the local university. Right away, they assembled a team to take care of this matter. It was made up of archaeologists and paleontologists hailing from the INCUAPA or the Institute of Archaeological and Paleontological Research of the Pampean Quaternary. This scientific organization is under the National University of Argentina. They started to dig and soon made a fascinating discovery!

A Rock Just Like That

In 2015, an object like this was discovered elsewhere in Argentina. That one had been three feet long. While the two fossils carried the same pattern, the composition was different. It was also a lot bigger in size! Do you have any idea where these artifacts could have come from? If you ask us, this sounds like such an exciting discovery. The experts did not get to examine the first one, but they did this for Juan’s.

A Crew Of Fishermen

In 2019, a couple of fishermen saw an intriguing rock at the bottom of some river. This story took place in Argentina, even though it took place elsewhere in the South American country. The pattern was the same as the one that Juan found on his range, although it was much smaller in size. Fair enough, it was just a fragment. Still, scientists deem it a very important discovery. The unique pattern of the shell, after all, led them to a theory about what it really was. It is now time for the moment of truth!

It Was The Same But Tinier

This fossil, found by a couple of fishermen, was as long as three feet. It had a different shape than the one that Juan discovered on the ranch. When scientists looked into the matter, they came to the conclusion that the fishermen had discovered an egg! The one that was found on the ranch, on the other hand, was an adult. The two fossils hailed all the way back from the prehistoric era.

They Are Not From Tortoises

We doubt that you have heard of the glyptodon in the past! This is a creature that sounds like it was closely related to the turtle and tortoise. But in reality, they had only certain qualities in common with the tortoises such as their huge shells. They also had the ability to retract their head and feet from the shell completely. On top of that, it is fascinating to hear that they were neither lizards nor amphibians.

An Extinct Animal Called The Glyptodon

The glyptodon is the name used for the big creature that once roamed South America. They might not be closely related to tortoises, but they had plenty in common with armadillos! The large creatures were also equipped with big claws and scaly shells. There were even some that came with a spiked tail that resembled a mace! Others were as large as a car. Let us learn more about the one that Juan found…

There Were Several In The Area

When the archaeologists and paleontologists proceeded with the dig, they learned an interesting thing. They found not just one but four glyptodon shells in the area! This was pretty unusual since, in the past, experts would only ever find a single specimen. They were excited to find four shells close to each other. More than that, they were of different sizes too. It was only natural for them to wonder whether this was a family! Read on to learn more about what made these fossils so strange.

More Interesting Pieces Of Information

There were a few more characteristics that made the fossils different from their predecessors. For one thing, they all faced west! They took it to meant that the creatures died in one go. The proximity of the shells meant that they must have been either a family or a hunting group. This was the first time that they saw glyptodons in a single group. They knew that they had to run more tests on the fossils.

They Had To Run More Tests

It was important to run even more tests on the shells if they wanted more conclusive results. The experts had to remove the bone fragments from them, among other things. They also had to find out which genus the animals belonged to. While scientists used to think that there were many different varieties, they now believe that there were only two. What was the fate of these creatures anyway?

How And Why They Went Extinct

The extinction of these creatures took place about 10,000 years ago. Early humans probably hunted them for their shells, which could then be used as a shelter. They were likely used as some kind of protective gear against predators as well. We are sure that you at least know about the ice age that happened several millennia ago, but it was not the only thing that caused their extinction.

Thanks To Our Ancestors

There is a chance that glyptodons were herbivores even though they came equipped with big claws and a big armor. At that size, they must have had to fend off apex predators. The population of these animals must have taken a hit due to the ice age, but humans also caused them to go extinct due to hunting. In fact, the animals in question had been the first animals to go extinct at the hands of our ancestors! Why did they hunt them in the first place?

They Had A Special Shell

There were several reasons the glyptodons were hunted. First of all, the huge and hard shells must have been attractive to our forebears. They were the perfect thing to use as a makeshift shelter. You might think that humans lived in caves back then, but there were not many of those available. On the other hand, a shell like this could fit two to three people. This was not the only reason they were hunted.

It Was Used For Weaponry

Early humans needed to fend off a lot of predators too. We had to find a way to stay safe no matter what. The glyptodons had a spikey mace for a tail that could help with these. The bones were helpful as crude tools too. Aside from that, it must have been impressive to kill a glyptodon due to its size. These creatures, as you can see, came in handy in more ways than one for our ancestors.

What Came Next After This

The discovery of glyptodon fossils in Argentina proved significant. One of the team members Pablo Messineo explained, “The presence of these four animals that apparently died together, will allow, for the first time, to make a detailed study of certain aspects not yet evaluated.” The team ran tests on the fossils to see whether they were right about their hypotheses. Let us see what came next after this.

It Required Special Care

A shell weighed around a thousand pounds. They are big and had to be handled with great care. The team could not hold in their excitement about the find. field paleontologist called Ricardo Bonini said, “These types of cases, in which several individuals appear together who died in the same circumstances, are truly exceptional and will undoubtedly give us a lot of information about these enigmatic animals and will allow us to test various hypotheses that we have been handling in recent years.”

Why It Was So Special

It was only natural for them to assume that they had stumbled upon a family since there were four of them. The tests would be interesting should this hold water. Scientists had never before found a family, so it was going to give them a lot of valuable data. It is even possible that they would discover a new species of the animals. There were several other things that they hoped to learn about the glyptodon.

They Could Learn A Lot From This

Perhaps they would now be able to learn more about the age and sex of these creatures. It was hard to figure out these things in the past since they did not have much to work on. Pablo Messineo, one of the archaeologists of INCUAPA, explained, “(These fossils) will allow us, among other things, to see if there was sexual dimorphism (that is, differences between males and females) and the differences between adult and juvenile individuals.” That sounds like a ton of things to learn from just one find! We can’t wait to learn more about these fascinating creatures. But where did they bring the fossils anyway?

If You Want To Visit It

Right now, the fossils are no longer in the ranch. They have been brought to a special paleontology room in Cine Avenida in Argentina. The plan is to allow the general public to look at these fossils once they are finished extracting the information that they need from them. This is literally and figuratively a big find. It would be exciting to see them up close and personal since a shell is roughly as big as a Volkswagen Beetle. None of these would have been possible if the cows did not head out to look for water on that day. Thanks to a farmer called Juan de Dios Sota, we have learned many new things about these creatures who roamed the planet a long time before you and I got here. How awesome is that?
